unlocking narratives

George Masarira as seen on Nataal and mentioned in Whitewall.art is a Zimbabwean interdisciplinary cosmopolitan philosophy visual artist based in Bulawayo. His artistic transition evolves as he finds himself enclosed in a contemporary spectrum which influences most of his works. He is mainly inspired by concurrent unfoldings around him, encompassing, politics, economics, religion and environmental issues. He can be described as a radical cosmopoli. He joined the national gallery of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo as the youngest artist at that time, 25, in 2015. He recently Curated Pivot, an exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Bulawayo in July 2021. He was chairperson of VAAB -Visual Artists’ Association of Bulawayo- between 2019 and 2021 and sits on the Advisory board of the African Food Revolution from 2017 to present. George is represented by MM Arthouse in Johannesburg.

my process

The approach to his work is a philosophical one that uses a variety of ordinary objects that people can relate to, such as keys, playing cards, newspapers, any familiar everyday object he wishes to use; he gives these objects symbolism. Using these objects creates a narrative that can fit the concept of every story that he is addressing. Every idea that he develops is a researched interactive subject that evokes dialogue. For instance, newspapers document our day to day lives; thus, using them in his work is more like sharing our own stories as a society with the world at large; in turn, creating artworks that preserve history. As a painter, he introduce these objects to find a narrative that blends with the body of his work.
